Supporting flexible learning, accessibility and connection to place
Project Overview
Located on Dja Dja Wurrung Country on the outskirts of Chewton, Chewton Primary School sits within a significant bushland setting. ROAM was engaged to upgrade learning environments and undertake essential improvements to the heritage-listed 1911 school building, while carefully respecting its history, character and setting.
The project included upgrades to classrooms, circulation spaces and accessibility together with new insulation, lighting, carpet, lockers and refreshed interior finishes. New reading nooks were introduced within classrooms to support retreat, quiet learning and small group activities. Matching seating within corridor spaces created additional opportunities for gathering and informal learning beyond the classroom.

A key focus of the design was improving connection, visibility and flexibility within the existing building. Selected windows between classrooms and corridors were removed and replaced with new timber bi-fold windows, creating greater transparency and stronger visual connection between spaces. Existing windows were salvaged and re-homed by the school. Externally, the original heritage colour scheme was restored and a new accessible ramp now connects the main school building with the nearby art and amenities spaces.
Delivered within a modest budget, the renovation provides a calm, functional and contemporary learning environment while carefully retaining the heritage character of this valued community building. The upgraded spaces support day-to-day learning, accessibility and long-term durability while reflecting the school’s strong commitment to reconciliation, sustainability and community connection.
